Stalked
From forbes.com: Stalking Steve Brian Caulfield, 06.29.09, 06:55 PM EDT Apple chief returns to the company he co-founded.
CUPERTINO, Calif. -- There was a man in a skirt wearing a red backpack. [..] You know, it does say it's a Utilikilt right on the buttcheek. Or is it the red backpack that's worthy of note? | | Saturday, June 6th, 2009 | | 10:49 am |
11 months: fishing
11 months today! And last night, Felix mastered the use of his magnetic fishing kit bath toy. All of a sudden. I'd shown him how it works a few weeks ago and he had enjoyed watching but didn't get that he could do it to. But last night he went straight to it and fished and fished and fished, obsessed like a man in a Hemmingway novel. | | Sunday, May 31st, 2009 | | 11:56 pm |
Felix at 10 months
I'd better write this quick, before it's 11 months. Felix is crawling and cruising easily. He's approaching mastery of standing and walking without support. (The longest I've seen him stand up for without grabbing anything was about 15 seconds.) For a while, he seemed to be using words for parentals (mama, dada, nana) but not for the last week or so. On the other hand, has a word for "light": "tah". He's very excited by lamps and lights, asks for us to turn them on by saying this and beams when they come on. Apparently he also asks for the backpack carrier by name. He meows at the cats. Our fluffiest, Frank, is pretty tolerant of his approaches and his clumy petting. He's fond of the dog, who finds him a bit scary, but who is gradually coming around thanks to the mealtime food-scattering. Speaking of which, he's eagerly consuming many kinds of solid food. Now, here's your cuteness delivery. I took Felix in the backpack-carrier to the farmers' market this morning, and the nice lady with the grand vegetable stand gave him a cucumber. He held it and gnawed on it for the rest of the expedition, and on through my unloading groceries and watering in the backyard (still on my back); he also picked it up and walked around with it in the living room during the day. He found it especially funny to offer us bites of it. Click to play: (Here's a direct link to the movie.) | | Friday, May 1st, 2009 | | 12:17 am |
Weird things
At SJSU, Juls found a pamphlet by Jews For Jesus that describes Jesus as being like... Steve Jobs. I kid you not. Tonight we went to a little presentation ceremony at SJSU where the Associated Students were bestowing awards, one of which was to an academic we're both very fond of. When I got to see the award, I immediately noticed that it said "San Jose Staté University". Which is just a little silly. | | Monday, December 8th, 2008 | | 11:23 pm |

The Gruen Transfer
Alas, none of my Australian sources clued me into The Gruen Transfer before the season was done and most of the episodes gone from the podcast feed (s'OK, found 'em watchable via other means). It's just my kind of show: snarky media analysis, by insiders, and funny (to Australians). | | 11:58 am |
Departure
Our house seems very quiet now: we dropped my parents off at the airport last night. It was great having them here for Felix's first weeks, and of course I'll miss them. C fixed most of the chairs in the house (including replacing the icky vinyl with canvas!); acmarita cooked more meals than I can count; and then of course there were important baby-snuggling duties. Meanwhile, they're done with their temporary phone. If you're in the area and you have a guest who could use a prepaid AT&T GoPhone SIM card with about $25 credit, ping me in email. | | Thursday, August 14th, 2008 | | 12:08 pm |
Attention vgqn and other Masters One of the sweet no-heat peppers that we bought at the Master Gardeners seedling sale this year turns out to be very hot indeed. We thought we were getting Giallo di Cuneo, which according to our notes is supposed to be yellow, but what we grew is red and very spicy! | | Tuesday, July 22nd, 2008 | | 4:27 pm |

Conditioning
We're singing Felix an "eating song" when he's eating so we can remind him to when he's not (and should be). For this purpose we're using the chorus of TMBG's Dinner Bell. | | 12:11 am |

Missed opportunity
"Shield"? "Shell"? medela are missing a grand opportunity by not calling these "nipple sombreros". (Nipple sombreros should only be used with the supervision of a lactation consultant.) | | 9:55 am |
Two types
I am coming to terms with the fact that there are two types of people in this world: breeders and sleepers. | | Sunday, July 13th, 2008 | | 3:01 pm |

Dream
I'm squatting, wearing a curious puffy white-and-orange poncho and a soft padded helmet -- and a whole bunch of (dream-fiction) coworkers are stretched out behind me in a wiggly line, garbed and squatting identically. We're in... a Trader Joe's or similar market -- but it's night and whoever our employer is, they've hired the venue for some kind of corporate bonding game. In comes a line of other coworkers in matching green ponchos and helmets. They follow each other as if it's a congo line as the head of that line snakes around to me at the head of our white-and-orange line. The woman at the head has begun reading out some memorised game script about how the green characters have been so long oppressed by the orange ones -- it seems she's retelling a battle between differently-dyed smurf factions. There's also a dream-fiction video game reference here. It becomes apparent to me that someone's set up a corporate role-playing game based on ethnic cleansing -- as they intone rules about a game of mass tag. But there's some kind of alternate capture-the-flag way to win this game, and as the go signal is given and everyone is racing everywhere I start brainstorming ways to take advantage of the terrain so I can last long enough to win that way. I'm vaguely aware that I'm breaking the rules by knocking down products from the shelves to trip green-poncho pursuers, and grabbing other products for improvised weapons. I duck onto a stoop, wish I'd paid enough attention to the rules to know where this winning trick will be, and start tearing off the brightly-coloured crop from my quilted helmet. If I can make myself resemble a ghost from Pac-Man and gain their powers, I'll be able to make a run on the target -- as long as there are no energy pills in this supermarket... Then Felix woke me up, so that's all we know. | | Wednesday, July 9th, 2008 | | 7:01 am |
Thanks for all the happy words! Assorted facts:
I'm out of the office for nine weeks (the entirety of July and August). My parents flew over to stay with us for seven of these weeks. Juls' parents, who both live in the bay area, are also spending a lot of time with us. We had a planned home birth with a highly competent midwife, who we would happily recommend. (Our midwife brought two assistant midwives to the birth too.) We also had a terrific doula. I'm pretty glad for the many prep courses we took here. And, uh, this guy's DVD. There was, in fact, a cake baked with zero birthday candles on it to celebrate this zeroth birthday. |
